What Is a Tincture?

A tincture is typically an extract of plant or animal material dissolved in ethanol. Solvent concentrations of 25-60% are common but may run as high as 90%. In chemistry, a tincture is a solution that has ethanol as its solvent. Our tinctures are at the 25-60% range. WARNING: For those alcohol-sensitive or abstaining, many tinctures are alcohol-based—contact us for alternatives.

Why a Tincture?

Tinctures are a very effective way of administering active components. By utilizing the high absorption ability of the mouth, this allows quicker assimilation of active components and hence faster action on the body.

What About the Taste?

Herbal tinctures can be quite bitter—the more potent the herb, the more bitter the tincture. The old traditional way of taking bad-tasting medicines that works: Block your nose by squeezing it with your fingers to prevent taste. So, if you don’t like the taste:

  • Block your nose for a couple of seconds before taking.
  • Make up tincture dose with a small amount of water.
  • Drink quickly while keeping nose blocked.
  • Follow with water or fruit juice.
  • Unblock nose after finishing.
This is a surefire way to take any bad-tasting tincture.
